What Is A Real Estate Novelist? (Solution)

  • A Real Estate novelist writes the property descriptions that go into Real Estate Ads. They have mastered the fine art of getting that maximum amount of information into the smaller number of characters possible. While that may be true, it apparently is not what Joel meant when he wrote the term.

r/AskScienceFiction – [Billy Joel – Piano man] What is a real estate novelist?

There are a lot of folks in the pub that are desperatley miserable and lonely. They really want to go away, but they are unable to. They daydream about their pasts or fantasize about what they may be able to accomplish if they just set their thoughts to it. Take, for example, ‘John at the bar’: Then he says to Bill, “Bill, I believe this is killing me.” As a grin faded from his lips, he continued: “Well, Bill, I feel I might be a movie star/If only I could get out of this place.” Nevertheless, he will not be, because he is unable to escape.

And Bill himself, our piano player, wishes he could be doing this somewhere else and, in all likelihood, could.

He’s a real estate agent, to be precise.

He, on the other hand, feels he is superior.

  1. Although he is a novelist, his abilities extend much beyond that.
  2. He has no plans to travel anywhere.
  3. In the meantime, he’s numbing the pain by telling everyone who will listen (typically Davy, who in his opinion is still enjoying his finest years in the Navy since it can’t get much better than THIS) that he’s come up with a fantastic concept for a book, you know?
  4. The best-selling title.
  5. However, that will not be the case tonight.
  6. Tomorrow.

Real Estate Novelist

Lilmarie, You’ve come to the right place! Since the song’s release, fans have been asking Billy Joel this question, and he has finally responded! You may read the transcript of the whole interview with him by clicking on this link. “It’s a phrase that I made up. When I was working at a piano bar in Los Angeles in the early ’70s, everyone came in and unloaded their problems on you. Paul worked as a real estate broker, and he used to say things like, “I’m writing a book.” I would wonder how he was getting any work done, unless he was doing what F.

But he was there every night, stoned to a pulp.

Even while he continues to work in real estate during the day and drink throughout the night, Paul will continue to believe that one day he would create the “Great American Novel.” I appreciate you taking the time to ask your inquiry.

It occurred to me when rereading the lyrics just how much I enjoy this song and its tragic concept of unrealized promise! I hope this has been of use to you. Joelline

Piano Man by Billy Joel – Songfacts

  • Inspired by Joel’s experiences playing piano at The Executive Room, a piano bar in Los Angeles, he created this piece. After his debut solo album, Cold Spring Harbor, failed to chart, he spent six months working there in 1972. The characters in the song are based on real-life folks that Joel met while working at The Executive Room in Los Angeles. It was Elizabeth Weber who became Joel’s first wife when he married her in 1973 (they divorced in 1982). Joel used to perform in the band Bill Martin, which explains why the other patrons refer to him as Bill in the song. Joel Martin’s middle name is Martin, and he recounted his time performing at The Executive Room to the Metronewspaper on July 6, 2006: “The performance was something I performed for approximately six months to help pay the rent. I was living in Los Angeles at the time and attempting to get out of a horrible record deal that I had signed. The Piano Stylings of Bill Martin was a fictitious moniker that I used to bulls-t my way through everything. What I don’t understand is how that song became so famous. It’s like a karaoke crowd pleaser. The tune is not very nice and is highly repetitive, and the words are written in the style of limericks. When it became a success, I was both surprised and ashamed. But my songs are like my children, and when I hear a song like that, I say to myself, ‘My child did quite well.'” For those who are interested in the assertion about limericks, Joel points out that the finest example of this may be found in the following stanza, which, if read at a quick pace, does indeed sound like a limerick: Now, John, the bartender, is a personal buddy of mine. He provides me with complimentary beverages, and he is quick with a joke or to light up your cigarette. Nevertheless, there’s somewhere else he would want to go
  • This is the first song and title track from Joel’s breakthrough album, which was released following his contract with Columbia Records. In 1971, Family Records published Joel’s debut album, and the contract he signed to get that deal came back to haunt him years after the fact. Joel did not comprehend the deal, as is typically the case with young performers, and as a result, he was legally obligated to the label “for life.” When Joel broke his contract with Family and signed with Columbia, he was required to pay royalties to the label for years. This song is in waltz time (3/4), which is rare for a pop song. The Goo Goo Dolls’ song ” Iris,” Seal’s song ” Kiss From A Rose,” and Joe Cocker’s version of ” With a Little Help From My Friends” are examples of songs that use this time signature. The line “Paul is a real estate novelist” refers to a real estate broker who was a regular at the bar and who always claimed to be working on a book. Due to the fact that Paul was usually in the pub, Joel assumed he would never complete the song. The harmonica portion was influenced by Bob Dylan. A strap was used to hold the harmonica by Dylan, who was the first person Joel saw use one while playing another instrument at the same time
  • This is a tune that every piano bar has to deal with since unimaginative clients would surely request it. Joel, on the other hand, points out that when the song is performed in this arrangement, it may get rather monotonous. In an interview with Howard Stern in 2014, he said: “I believe it is a passable tune. It doesn’t seem to have changed much. When they play it on the piano as an instrumental, it becomes extremely monotonous because they are repeating the same thing over and over and over and over again “
  • Joel frequently uses this song as an encore during his live performances
  • The album version runs 5:37, but the single version was cut down to 4:30 to make it more appealing to radio stations, which preferred shorter songs
  • Elton John makes a reference to a piano man in his 1971 song Tiny Dancer. The two became friends and have traveled together several times. Brandon from Peoria, Illinois, is to be credited with the suggestion. David Heintz was the inspiration for the words “And he’s talkin’ with Davy who’s still in the Navy and probably will be for the rest of his life.” His daughter Lisa shared the following information with us: “In 1972, while serving at the Navy, he happened to run across Billy Joel in a bar in Spain. He married while serving in the military and went on to have three children. He died in 2003 as a result of Lou Gehrig’s disease. It truly annoys me when I hear this song played on the radio and they leave out this particular section of the lyrics.”
  • A parody of this song, “Ode to a Superhero,” was created by Al Yankovic, and it depicts events from the Spider-Man film. The original chorus line, “Sing us a song, you’re the piano man,” is changed to “Sling us a web, you’re the Spider-Man.” The Spanish singer Ana Belen recorded a rendition of this song in Spanish, which she titled “El Hombre Del Piano,” which means “The Piano Man.” The lyrics of her song are considerably different from the original
  • They are more focused on The Piano Man’s relationship with his wife in the past, as well as on his despair in present. The characters that work in the tavern are seldom described. Credit for the suggestion goes to: Sergigres – Barcelona, Spain
  • Joel walks off a bridge, playing the harmonica phrase from this song, towards the conclusion of the video for his song “You’re Only Human (Second Wind).” He did this after preventing a young guy from committing suicide. Chet – Saratoga Springs, New York, provided the inspiration for this suggestion. Joel discovered that this song had a surprising amount of appeal to the younger generation when he performed at the Bonnaroo festival in 2015 and the audience sung along with him. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he stated that the response was surprising given the song’s nature as “an old, lengthy ballad about a guy at a dismal piano bar.”
  • Michael Omartian’s accordion is included in the mix, and he plays it well. Accordion playerTom Torriglia describes the instrument as “a wonderful, subtle element in the background that you really have to listen for because of the more dominating reed instrument being played.” “That the accordion does not fight for space in the song with its cousin, the harmonica, is something I appreciate. The accordion lends a touch of sorrow to the mix.”

Piano Man is a song written and performed by American singer-songwriter Billy Joel. It was released in 1982 on the album Piano Man. It was Joel’s debut song in North America, and it was included on his 1973 album of the same name, which was later released as a single on November 2, 1973, by Columbia Records. As a piano player at a bar, Joel’s perspective on the song is reflected in the lyrics, which recount his memories of his time there as well as the individuals he met. “Piano Man” is based on Joel’s real-life experiences as a lounge musician in Los Angeles from 1972 to 1973, which he pursued in an effort to get away from his contracted New York City-based record company at the time, Family Productions, following the poor commercial performance of the album Cold Spring Harbor.

In this chapter, Joel recounts many fictional characters, including a bartender called John and a “real estate novelist” named Paul, both of whom are based on real-life people.

This song became one of Joel’s most well-known songs with the publication of The Stranger, which marked the beginning of his meteoric rise to fame as a singer.

As a result of its “cultural, historic, or aesthetic value,” the Library of Congress selected the recording “Piano Man” for preservation in the National Recording Registry in 2015.

Overview

“Piano Man” is a dramatized account of Joel’s own six-month stint as a piano-lounge singer at the now-defunct Executive Room club in Los Angeles’ Wilshire area in 1972–73, which inspired the song. In an interview with Inside the Actors Studio, Joel said that he had to leave New York because of a disagreement with his former recording business, and that he and his first wife ended up living in Los Angeles for three years at that time. Due to the fact that he needed to work to pay the bills but was unable to do so under his more well-known identity, Joel worked as a piano pianist at the Executive Room bar under the alias “Bill Martin” (Joel’s full name is William Martin Joel).

The bartender who worked during Joel’s shift at the piano bar was referred to as “John at the bar” by the characters.

It was Elizabeth Weber, Joel’s first wife, who worked at The Executive Room as a waitress while Joel played the piano in the song “The waitress is practicing politics.” The phrase refers to Joel’s first wife, Elizabeth Weber, with whom he moved to Los Angeles from New York in 1972 and who worked as a waitress at The Executive Room while Joel played the piano.

Joel had relocated from New York to Los Angeles to record his first album, Cold Spring Harbor.

As a result, Joel said that he was “hiding out” in a pub, where he was performing under the guise of Bill Martin, while attorneys for Columbia Records attempted to get him released from his first record contract.

Content

The verses of the song are sung from the perspective of a bar piano player who focuses primarily on the “regular crowd” that “shuffles” into the bar at nine o’clock on a Saturday morning: an old man, John the bartender, the waitress, businessmen, and bar regulars such as “real estate novelist” Paul and navy sailor Davy. The chorus of the song is sung from the perspective of a bar piano player who focuses Almost all of these people have had their goals dashed or never realized, and the pianist’s role is to assist them in “forgetting about life for a moment,” as the song’s lyrics suggest.

The chorus, which is performed in the style of a barroom sing-along, is composed by the bar patrons themselves, who sing, “Sing us a song, / You’re the piano player; / Sing us a song tonight, / You’re the piano player.

Reception

Cash Box predicted that the “soft, delicate narrative track, evocative of that stuff being spun by Harry Chapin, will draw a large number of people wanting to dig their teeth into an equal balance of music and lyric.”

Releases

In 1973, it was released as a single and later as the second track on Joel’sPiano Manalbum. It has since appeared on various best hits compilations, including Joel’sPiano Manalbum. When the song was first released as a single, Columbia Records management thought it to be excessively lengthy (5:37), and thus it was pulled from the charts. When it came time to release the song, two verses were sliced in half and patched back together (4:33). A promo 45 included an even shorter cut, which began at (3:16) and eliminated the fourth verse as well as the final chorus.

It was chopped down to 3:05 in Joel’s follow-up song, “The Entertainer,” which references to the song’s length and its editing: “It was a wonderful song, but it ran too long / If you’re going to have a success, you must make it fit / So they trimmed it down to 3:05.”

Composition

Joel composed and originally played the song in the key of C major, which is the key of the album. It is written in the 34waltztime signature and opens with a jazzy piano solo before transitioning into the piano and harmonica introduction. Its bassline is a descending walking bassline in C that concludes with a D – G turnaround in the verses and choruses. Instrumentally, Joel’s 1973 version is comprised of the following instruments: piano, harmonica, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, accordion, mandolin, drums, and more.

Track listing

The original music video for this song was published in 1973, and it is still in circulation today. It includes Joel in the role of Bill Martin, a bar act who performs the song, and it takes place in a normal American bar as the backdrop. In 1985, a new version of the video was made, with new extras and a considerably more busy and cheerful bar environment than the original. However, while the initial video included an alternate take of the song that was the same length as the album version, it was replaced with the new video, which featured the album version.

Popularity

The track debuted in the Billboard Top 40 in April 1974 at number 30, eventually peaking at number 25 and became Joel’s first top 40 success in the United States. In Canada, the song reached number 10 on the charts, establishing Joel as a celebrity in the country. For the period 1975 to 1980, every single one of Joel’s charting singles achieved a greater peak in Canada than in the United States, with the exception of songs that reached1 in both markets. In the beginning, “Piano Man” was a moderate hit in the United States.

The concert was billed as ” Rocket Man Meets Piano Man” in advertisements for the inaugural Face to Face tour, which featured Elton John and Billy Joel.

Ultimate Classic Rock ranked it number 63 on their list of the “Top 100 Classic Rock Songs.” As a result of its “cultural, historical, or artistic significance,” “Piano Man” was chosen as one of 25 sound recordings to be saved by the Library of CongressNational Recording Registry in 2015.

In addition to being a huge hit, it is also a pretty fine song. However, it appears that others have effectively clarified it for you at this point. Perhaps you might request a dictionary for your next birthday, given that you were unable to attend Christmas festivities? Who said I didn’t celebrate Christmas? I had a fantastic Christmas with my family.

This is a really nice tune. Those two lines in the lyrics would have made for a fantastic song if they hadn’t been included. They have an odor that reminds me of rotten Limburger cheese.

Possibly. The meaning of the phrase is uncertain. In addition, the next phrase says, “Who never had time for a wife.” What does that mean? Billy, those two sentences should have been changed with something else.

Perhaps you’re being overly exacting in your insistence on a precise grammatical arrangement in your writing. Is it possible that it might have been written in a different way to make more literal sense? Probably. In spite of this, I’ve understood the line since I first heard it when I was 13, and this is despite having a Grammar Nazi mother. What is so tough about being so busy that you don’t have time to marry, as far as “who never had time for a wife” is concerned, what exactly is the problem?

That is a story that occurs frequently in real life.

There are a variety of reasons why people do not marry.

I ate your “martial” grammatical error. Perhaps this is true in a few professions that require a significant amount of travel. Being married allows you to save time. I’m married, and I get a lot more work done than I would if I were single since I have a wife who cooks and cleans for me all the time.

  • Many of the guys who travel much are married.
  • Realtors and real estate salespeople don’t travel a lot for their jobs.
  • As a result, the statement “never had time for a wife” is illogical.
  • The books that successful brokers publish about how to be successful in sales are not novels, but rather how-to manuals.
  • The lyrics of Billy Joel are superior.
  • Only a handful of posters seem to “get it.” More about Billy’s lines may be found here- Billy, you should have modified some of those lines.

A discussion identical to this was started a few of months ago, and it was about lyrics in a song that irritated the person who started it. “Signs” was a song I chose on my own initiative. Did you have any opportunity to contribute in that thread? When it comes to sentence form, you are quite concerned about being literal.

It might be entertaining to take apart, but you appear to be completely preoccupied with one specific music.

It is a tepid justification for a clumsily phrased sentence.

The majority of successful men, particularly those who travel extensively for their jobs, have a wife or girlfriend. Is there anyone out there who “never had time for a wife”? Billy, you’ve written a good tune. Those two sentences, on the other hand, should have been modified.

Several of us picked up on that intention right away when we first heard it.

  • In terms of “never having time for a wife,” the Piano Man’s lyrical imaginings of the flaws of other people’s lives are what he is referring to here.

What the heck is a “Real Estate Novelist”?

Is there anyone who knows? The following are some lyrics from the piano man: Now Paul is a real estate writer who has never had the opportunity to have a family. And he’s talking to Davy, who’s still in the Navy and will most likely stay there for the rest of his life. Posted by HSNow with permission. Paul is an author who specializes in real estate. Someone who sells real estate during the day but spends his or her evenings writing “The Great American Novel,” in my opinion. To put it another way, his passion is writing, but he needs to make a living by selling real estate.

  • And he’s talking to Davy, who’s still in the Navy and will most likely stay there for the rest of his life.
  • By claiming to be working on a novel, he is able to detach himself from the treadmill he is on throughout the day.
  • In her song “All I want to do,” Sheryl Crow painted a similar image of the personalities in the Los Angeles bar scene.
  • He is also plainly ugly, and I wonder if he has ever had a day of fun in his whole life.

In which case, it’s 2:15 a.m. on a Sunday morning, if I’m not mistaken. When I wake up around 2:15 a.m. on a Sunday morning, I put on Billy Joel’s “piano man” because it seems like the type of music to listen to when I’m not really sleepy but the concept of doing something useful seems alien to me. So, here I am, as you can see. My thoughts are constantly flitting back and forth between the past and the future, and they don’t seem to want to stay in either time zone for more than a few minutes at a time– which is OK with me.

Then I look forward to going shopping with Kari today and talking about my evident bachelorettehood, which is something I’ve been talking about a lot with the outlawa lately.

When I got married, I had always planned on getting all of that stuff, and then I started flittering around again, wondering how my life would have turned out if I had stayed in newspapers, and whether I would have been able to handle that lifestyle and whether I would still be alone, or whether I would have stayed where I am now, only as a newspaper reporter instead of a corporate copy whore.

and basically, I’m simply thinking on this sunny Sunday morning that, despite my moments of loneliness and stinky-jobness, I’m fairly content with my life right now. I’m feeling very good about myself and how things are going right now. (This page has been seen 94 times, with 1 visit today)
